Six Swans

I sort of went the fairy-tale route on this one. The Story of the Six Swans.....you can read the Grimm brothers version of this..... BUT! if you're willing to pick up a novel, theres a wicked re-telling of the classic fairytale by Juliet Marillier. It is Book 1 of The Seven Waters Trilogy called "Daughter of the Forest"

Anyways! the thing that always catches me with this tale is the sixth brother in the end. The nettle shirt incomplete he has to live the rest of his life with one Swan wing instead of his arm. Forever in a sort of limbo between human and animal worlds... He even misses his mate....cause swans mate forlife you know T_T Yeah...so these are supposed to be him

Last two weeks....and this week! Woo!

Forthis week? Countour drawing. I haven't done this in years! So it was fun. Just a random magazine photo aaaaand my dog!

And then the last two weeks themes, slightly late, but better then not at all! I combined the two themes. Dreams, and Teeth.
I always, at least once a week dream about my teeth crumbling and mee pulling them out. There are alot of interpretations of these teeth dreams...fear of embarassement in an upcoming task, fear of being unprepared for crucial tasks ahead, frustration with physical appearances...and according to greek legend dreaming of teeth decaying and falling out means someone close to you is soon to die.
Teeth dreams suck.

*For those of you who may not know what a blind contour is- it's where you look at what you're drawing, like a model, or your own face, or a still life, but not at your drawing. NEVER look at your paper til you feel it's done. Don't lift the pen! (Unless you HAVE to... don't know why you'd have to...)

Hypothetically, these 2 themes could connect.

Dreams

Hey everyone, sorry i haven't been posting much, been pretty busy with work and art and stuff! So here is my dream images, i have two, so i might as well make up for the time that i missed. These are based on the process of dreaming, sharing the dreams, and in this way allowing the dreams to have a place in the "real world", They are dreams waiting to be discussed. It came about when another artist told me about his mother asking them "what did you dream last night?" which is exactly what my mother did when I was a child as well. So here it is ..

To have a potted head

Well, it's happened. I've missed a week. It was bound to at some point. Though this being free week, I suppose I could have done dance and stuck it in here. Oh well. I did this strangeness instead. It's all because I honestly wonder sometimes what it would be like to have a flowerpot on my head (I already know kettles are creepy), and what a spider would look like with no legs.


And what is with my colours dulling lately? I've never had this problem before - but Jill, I know what you've been talking about now!

Keep Time! I wasted time....

Sorry for the extreme lateness - but this is Shakespeare. Still didn't come out quite the way I wanted (I overworked the tree and my handwriting is terrible), but it was a good learning experience. I was going for those faux drawn posters you see that are so cliche and have paris or italy or fleur written on them.

I used the first four lines of Shakespeare's Sonnet 65. Full sonnet below.

So I wanted to pick a prompt that could be both challenging and something really broad, so you can all come up with something really different from each other.

watching the opening ceremonies for the olympics, it struck me how radically different dance is for each culture/genre/whatever. so shake it up, people! interpret this however you want. :)

New Themes!

I was thinking, what if we all posted themes here, in the comments, and then each week I can just put up a new one? That way no matter what, there will be one the next week, cause we'll have a list here to go by? What do people think? I could list them on the side, and that way we'll know each week what's going on!

I drew somethign without a reference image? That's practically magic in an of itself! nah...

It's a fortune teller!...demon... Maybe? Well, any fortune teller worth her salt knows that human entrails work Soooooo much better then bunny.

Another Turtle

So here's an image that i drew that was inspired by a fellow artist here in Banff. He was talking about magic and the creation story, and he said that he once heard his grandma talk about how the earth came to be, she was explaining to someone that the earth came to be when a turtle rose out of the universe through what we know now as the ocean. The listener asked "well... whats under the turtle?" The Grandma replied "Another Turtle." the listener then proceeded to ask "well whats holding up that turtle?" The Grandmother replied "Another Turtle." and so on and so on, until she just stopped him and said, "Its just turtles, turtles turtles, turtles, forever!" haha, not sure if that goes into the magic category, but i found the story to be pretty magical!
